A boiler heats water and circulates it through pipes to radiators or baseboard units. When it fails, the house cools and pipes can freeze. The average January low in Cleveland is near 22 degrees, so a failure in cold weather matters.

Call (440) 468-0237 if your boiler is not heating, is leaking or is making noise. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas utility or 911 first.

When a boiler problem needs fast attention

  • No heat during cold weather.
  • Water around the boiler or dripping from the relief valve.
  • Banging, kettling or gurgling noises.
  • Pressure that drops or rises beyond the normal range.
  • Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm. Leave and call the gas utility or 911.

Carbon monoxide is a safety issue, not a repair issue. A working detector near the boiler and sleeping areas is essential.

Boiler pump repair

The circulator pump moves hot water through the system. When the bearings wear or the impeller fails, the boiler fires but the house does not warm up.

A pump replacement is a common, fast repair. We match flow, head and flange size to the old pump. Flushing the loop at the same time helps the new pump last.

Leaks, pressure and the expansion tank

A boiler holds a set pressure. If it rises, the relief valve may open and drip. If it falls, there is a leak somewhere. An expansion tank absorbs pressure as water heats, and a waterlogged tank causes high pressure swings.

We find the leak, test the tank and check the fill valve. A hidden leak in a slab or wall is a job for leak detection.

Older homes and hydronic heat

Some mid-century homes in North Olmsted have hot water radiators or baseboard heat. Piping can be steel or copper and may include old air vents and valves.

An older boiler may be efficient enough with service. If it is near the end of life, we explain replacement options. Water heating on the same boiler differs from a separate water heater.

Seasonal service

An annual check before winter catches failing parts. Combustion testing, safety controls and pressure are part of it.

Scheduling a service in the fall is easier than an emergency in January.

Cold rooms and noisy radiators

When some rooms stay cold while others are fine, the cause is usually air trapped in a loop, a stuck zone valve or a closed radiator valve. Bleeding a radiator releases trapped air. If air returns every week, there is a leak or a failing air eliminator.

Baseboard units fail differently. Bent fins, dust and blocked air flow cut output. A cold baseboard on a working loop often points to a pump or valve problem upstream.

Venting, combustion air and carbon monoxide

A gas boiler needs a clear vent path and enough air to burn. A cracked flue, a blocked chimney or a closed-up boiler room can cause incomplete combustion.

Carbon monoxide has no smell. Install detectors on every level and near bedrooms, and replace them on the manufacturer schedule. If an alarm sounds, get everyone outside and call 911 or the gas utility before anything else.

Repair, replace or tune up

A boiler with a failed pump or a bad valve is worth repairing at almost any age. A boiler with a cracked heat exchanger is not. A unit that needs frequent repairs and burns more fuel each year may cost less to replace than to keep.

We give you the honest numbers. If a repair is not worth it, we say so. A fall tune-up costs far less than an emergency call on the coldest night.

Safety steps if the boiler fails

  • If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
  • Make sure carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries before the heating season.
  • Do not open a hot, pressurized system or remove the relief valve to look inside.
  • Shut off power to the boiler at the switch if you see water leaking from it.
  • Open cabinet doors on exterior walls and let taps drip if pipes are at risk of freezing.

Boiler piping, relief valve discharge and the expansion tank follow the maker instructions and the plumbing code, which in Ohio is based on the IPC.

What drives the cost of boiler repair

Our plumbers quote after inspection and before tools come out. A pump replacement costs less than a boiler replacement. Insurance rarely covers a worn boiler but may cover freeze damage. Call (440) 468-0237 and we will explain the factors for your case.
